Avoiding Causes of Driver Distraction

In today's world of electronic gadgets, it's easy to become a distracted driver and cause a motor vehicle accident due to your lack of attention to the road and your surroundings. A little pre-planning can help you can avoid many of these distractions, and, hopefully, an accident.

Plan Ahead

  • If you are going on a long trip, plan to stop every one to two hours in a safe place to rest, stretch, and refresh yourself. Make sure you drink plenty of water. Dehydration is a common cause of drowsiness.
  • You can eliminate many accident causing distractions by making any phone calls you know you will have to make before you start out on a trip.
  • Plan your route and program your GPS and other devices before you leave. Don’t try to read maps or any literature while driving.
  • Plan safe places to stop to make calls that must be made later.
  • Turn your phone off while driving so that you’re not tempted to answer any incoming calls.
  • Organize your vehicle up to minimize distractions. Keep maps and other items that you'll need on your trip organized and easily accessible.

If you are playing CDs, invest in an auto-changer that holds several so that you are not distracted by changing CDs. Alternatively, if someone else is in the car with you, ask them to change CDs, read maps, program your GPS, take or make calls or attend to any distractions for you.

Left Turn Accidents

Fender-benders come in all types–side swipes, head-ons, rear-enders. But one of the more common, and potentially more serious auto accidents occurs when a driver makes a left hand turn. Left turn accidents occur when a driver crossing the oncoming traffic in the other lane collides with one or more of those vehicles.

Unfortunately, the left turn driver will be presumed to be at fault in the absence of evidence showing another cause. Some of the evidence at the scene of an accident includes whether the left turn driver gave a proper turning signal alerting other drivers of his intent, whether he had sufficient distance to make a safe left turn, whether he had control of his vehicle, or was there a turn light to protect him.

In Texas if the left turn driver can show that another involved vehicle was at least 50% responsible for the accident, he may be able to recover all or part of his losses and damages.

The skilled investigative and legal team at Gonzales & Gonzales works diligently to uncover the facts of your accident and to protect and win your claim for damages.

If you were involved in a left turn accident and need experienced accident representation in the Austin area, please contact the experienced Texas auto accident attorneys at Gonzales & Gonzales for a no cost evaluation of your case.
